Wrong place. Wrong time.

You and your crew wake up handcuffed and locked in four separate cells. To get out, you’ll slip your cuffs, break out of your cell, get through the cell block, and open the door you came in through.

Nobody does this alone. You’ll need to describe what you see, ask for what you need, and work together on physical challenges and codes. It would be a good idea to brush up on your ciphers, too.

This is our most challenging room yet, and only about a third of teams make it out. You might need more than three clues. Think your group can talk its way out?

The Jail Cell is in our downstairs cell block at 102 East Main Street in downtown Belleville, IL.

You must be 13 or older to play. An adult must be on-site the whole game for any player under 16. This room is in the basement, chair lift access is available Players start handcuffed

The Jail Cell is for players 13 and older, since younger players won't be able to understand or complete the puzzles. Groups with 13- and 14-year-olds should bring an adult. It's located on the lower level and is reachable by stairs or chair lift. At least one player must be able to crawl. You'll start in the dark, and the game includes changing lights and loud sounds. Players begin handcuffed but can opt out by telling their game master. You may be locked in your own cell, but every player has access to an emergency release that unlocks all electronic locks at once.

Why is this room age restricted?

The puzzles in the Jail Cell are designed for teens and adults. Younger players won’t be able to understand or complete them. The room also starts in darkness and includes loud sounds, handcuffs, and locked cells, which can be too intense for young children.

Why is The Jail Cell rated EXPERT?

You don’t need to be a genius to escape the Jail Cell. The puzzles are so simple they’re hard, and the real challenge is communication. Players start handcuffed and may be locked in separate cells, so success depends on everyone talking through what they see and what they think. Adults tend to overthink simple problems, and that’s where this room gets tough. We recommend at least two adults per group.

What if I panic?

You’re never truly trapped. Your game master has full control of the room and is watching, listening, and able to talk with you the entire time, so help is always one word away. Every player also has access to an emergency release that unlocks all electronic locks at once. If the handcuffs make you uneasy, just tell your game master before the game starts and you can play without them.

Why do I need 4 - 8 Players?

The Jail Cell has four cells, and each one needs a player inside when the game begins. Beyond the room’s design, group size matters because this room is all about communication. Over the years we’ve found that two players tend to stop talking, and three players talk more but often clump together and give up. Four players hit the sweet spot, with natural communication and teamwork that can beat almost any puzzle. Past eight, the room gets overcrowded, with too many people on the same puzzle, too many voices, and too many chiefs. This room is designed to stress test a small team of 4-8 players.
