Which escape room should you book? Detention, The Jail Cell, or The Haunted House of Alice
Comparing Escape 618’s three Belleville, Illinois escape rooms by age, group size, difficulty, escape rate, and scare level, so you can pick the right one.
Plan a double date in downtown Belleville: pick an Escape 618 room for two couples, book a late slot, park free, then walk to dinner on Main Street.
For a double date in downtown Belleville, book a room at Escape 618 (four players meets the minimum for every room), pick a late Thursday to Sunday time slot, park free behind the building, then walk to dinner or drinks on Main Street. The whole night fits into a few easy hours without needing a car between stops.
Two couples looking for a night out don’t need a complicated plan. Downtown Belleville has an escape room, free parking, and a strip of restaurants and bars within a short walk. Here’s how to put the pieces together.
Escape 618 sits at 102 East Main Street in downtown Belleville. It’s the only escape room in town, and every set inside was designed and built by owner Tyler Renner and his team in a basement workshop on East Main. The rooms aren’t bought off a shelf.
Every booking at Escape 618 is private. You won’t be grouped with strangers, so two couples can book a room together and have it to themselves. That matters here because every room requires at least four players. The puzzles are built around conversation and teamwork, so a pair working alone tends to run out of steam fast. Two couples hit that four-person minimum exactly, which makes this format a natural fit.
Plan on 75 to 90 minutes total for the visit. The game itself runs 60 minutes, but check-in, a digital waiver, and a briefing from your game master happen first, and a free group photo happens after, win or lose.
Escape 618 currently has three rooms open, with two more in development. Each one suits a different mood.
Detention is the most family-friendly room in the building, with no scares and no sudden lighting changes. It’s also the most puzzle-heavy, built around classic escape room elements like locks, keys, and hidden clues. In the story, you and your group are stuck after class when teacher Mr. Picard steps out, and you have 60 minutes to find a hidden key and change your grades before he’s back. It’s open to ages 10 and up, holds 4 to 12 players, and roughly three out of four teams escape. If your group wants laughs over scares, start here.
The Jail Cell is built for ages 13 and up and holds 4 to 8 players. It’s the toughest room in the building, with roughly a third of teams making it out. You start the game in darkness, locked in separate cells, and have to slip out, break through the cell block, and reach the door you came in through. Expect physical challenges, codes, and ciphers, plus a setting downstairs that’s reached by stairs or a powered chair lift. If both couples like a real test, this is the one.
This is Escape 618’s only live-actor room, and it’s reserved for ages 16 and up. A live actor plays Alice, and the story asks your group to light a candle, hold hands, and invite her to play before time runs out. Expect jump scares, strobe lighting, and loud sound, though there’s no gore or blood involved. It’s not recommended for anyone with epilepsy or light sensitivity. If your group wants the night to start with adrenaline, this is it.
Escape 618 is open Thursday and Friday from 3 PM, with the last game at 9:30 PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 11 AM, also with a last game at 9:30 PM. That late 9:30 slot works well for a date night timeline: start the game in the evening, then head to dinner or drinks afterward instead of eating first. Monday through Wednesday, the space is open by appointment only.
Since weekends and holidays fill up first, book your slot one to two weeks ahead if you can. Walk-ins happen sometimes, but a reservation protects your evening. You can book directly through escape618.com/booking/.
A $35 deposit locks in your booking, and it’s just one deposit per group, not per player. The rest of the balance is paid after the game, split however your group prefers, by cash or card.
Parking isn’t something to stress over. There’s a free lot directly behind the Escape 618 building, in the old Ben’s / Belleville Public Library lot. Unmetered street parking surrounds the building too, and there’s a second free lot behind the Lincoln Theatre a short walk away. Arrive about 15 minutes before your scheduled time so there’s room to check in, sign the waiver, and get briefed before the clock starts.
Once your game wraps up and you’ve taken your group photo, dinner is steps away. Main Street in downtown Belleville is lined with options within walking distance of Escape 618:
With this many options within walking distance, there’s no need to move your cars between the escape room and dinner.
A double date here doesn’t take much planning. Pick a room based on how scary or puzzle-heavy you want the night to be, book a late slot online at escape618.com/booking/, park free behind the building or on the street, and walk to dinner once you’re out. Four people, one room, one evening on Main Street.
Yes. Every room at Escape 618 requires a minimum of four players, and two couples add up to exactly four. The puzzles are built around talking through clues together, so a group of four works better than a smaller team.
Call at least 24 hours before your scheduled game and your $35 deposit is refunded. Canceling later or not showing up means the deposit is forfeited.
Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your booked time. That covers check-in, signing a digital waiver, and a briefing from your game master. Arriving late can cut into your actual game time, since the following group’s slot can’t be delayed.
Yes. The lot directly behind the Escape 618 building is free, as is the street parking around downtown and the lot behind the Lincoln Theatre nearby.
